EVERYBODY
ORIGINAL PRODUCTION FEB 9 - MAR 3, 2024
LE REP PRODUCTIONS SUNDAYS MAY 19 & 26
by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins
Directed. By Skylar Evans
"A fascinating and funny riff on the traditional morality play Everyman, Everybody charts one person’s quest to understand the meaning of life. Along the way, they come across some familiar characters, including Friendship, Kinship, Stuff, Mind, Five Senses and Understanding, before facing the ultimate and inevitable encounter with Death.
Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ highly inventive script includes an on-stage lottery at the start of each performance to determine which actors will play some of the key roles. Symbolizing the randomness of death, this last-minute twist brings an exciting edge of unpredictability to every show.
The critically acclaimed Everybody earned playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins (Gloria, An Octoroon) his second nomination for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama (2018)."

(He/Him)
After appearing on the Left Edge stage in both Pass Over and The Play That Goes Wrong, as well as a recent run of the one-man play adaptation of Sleepy Hollow at 6th Street, Skylar is so happy to be directing a show by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins. While he wears many theatrical hats, he is grateful to return to his passion of directing, and feels lucky to have this amazing team. Favorite past directing credits include: Assassins (Co-directed, Sonoma Arts Live), Henry IV Part 1 (Petaluma Shakespeare Company), and Fuddy Meers (Cloverdale PAC). His favorite lighting credit is definitely Les Misérables (SRJC). You might spot him around town as a friendly, neighborhood electrician.
Director's Notes from Skylar Evans
Director’s Note:
What is more universal than Death?
Regardless of any potential separation one person might have from another, both are still both going to die. I mean, eventually! And, difficult as it is to sit down and contemplate or even discuss it, it is a collective inevitability.
So enter stage left: Everybody: an extremely meta-theatrical morality play, adapted from a 15th Century play (itself having origins even further that!), complete with a lottery every performance so that actors and audience members alike are kept on their toes; both a metaphor for the randomness of Death, as well as the diversity of Life. At times seeming so simple, at others, incredibly challenging, this play has been a joy to see through from original pitch to opening night.
What once appeared as initial obstacles have been embraced as opportunities for this show: no lobby for the audience before the show / the actors cannot get from the dressing room to the stage without being seen? Great, the show is happening all around you, as soon as you walk in the door!
To mount such a challenging show, I am incredibly grateful to have such a kind and supportive team; each and every one has been the absolute best to work with during this process. From contributing ideas to the music played before and after the show, helping to record sound cues, contributing to the set, the costumes, and, of course, being there for each other on and off stage in this intensely vulnerable process; I appreciate them all.
Oscar Wilde in 1889 penned “Life imitates Art more than Art imitates Life,” and this has me questioning how Death fits into that equation, and how we’ll never know, until we know.
I hope you see a little piece of yourself in Everybody.
